A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood

Well, it's not too often we get outside the walls of Karim to check out the neighborhood. Two or three times a week we (the visitor's) go to town to go to the market, get supplies, water, toilet paper and maybe go to the internet cafe and have lunch in town while the children are at school. And even when we go, our ride, drives in the gate and we are picked up inside the walls of Karim. The weather has been so hot, over +30 everyday, but one day it was maybe only +26 so we decided to go for a walk to the junction. We see quite a different view, walking, then we do speeding down the road in our Safari landcruiser. Our dusty, dirt road is quite busy with the locals walking their animals to the river for a drink of water, the Boda Boda's (motorcycle taxi's) giving the locals a ride home or to town and the local children walking the road to and from school. Well, we did make it to the junction and back, a little more hot and sticky and dirty than when we left but a great walk it was visiting with the locals. When the children got home from school the children wanted to ride bikes, like they do everyday when they get home, now that the bikes are fixed and they can ride them, thanks to Bibi Jean. Well, the yard is full of gravel, to keep down the mud situation when it rains, so learning to ride a bike on gravel is very difficult. Well, when Rehema led the way outside the gates of Karim to the dusty neighborhood road, with one of the bikes, we ALL followed...even the toddlers! This was exciting for all the kids. The kids laughed and chased Rehema down the dirt road as she tried to ride a bike. She did great but got alot of giggles from the local ladies sitting on the side of the road, selling their goods. And of course, every few minutes, we had to clear the kids off the road so the herds of cows, goats, donkeys and sometimes even the pigs, could get by. The odd Boda Boda would come flying by and the little ones would scream and run because they are so afraid of them! Then Cianna, a visitor from Lethbridge, and Mama Linda took a turn. What fun that was, riding down the road with one child on the back, hanging on for dear life, and the others all running behind you, laughing and giggling and yelling "my turn, my turn". YES, it was a Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood!! :)

Water Tank and Tower

In just 10 days they had the new water tower & tank up and running! Amazing! They really do get things done quickly around here.....maybe it's because someone is constantly saying "chop chop"!! We couldn't move into the 'Rafiki House' until we had water., so they even worked Sunday! Yesterday, friday, the tank was connected to the water well, then lifted and pushed to the top. 3 guys on top pulling and 3 guys on the ground pushing and Rehema telling them, in her loud voice, which way to go. Once the tank made it to the top it was connected to the house and ....'ta da'....the toilet flushed and taps have running water! It really amazes me how primitive they still do things around here but at the end of the job, it all still works! They could do some things so much easier and quicker if they were just shown and had the proper tools but I have to remember....I am here to HELP them NOT change them. Anyway, last night, was our first sleep in the new Rotary 'Rafiki House'. And the new water tower and tank was thanks to Cianna, Marilyn and Jean Eyre from Lethbridge and all their wonderful family and friends. THANKS!! :)

The Gift of a HOME

Our neighbor, Ernest, the one that I talk about all the time and is the one that works his butt off with a BIG smile really needs our help. I think it is extremely important that we not only help the Children of Karim but we help our neighbors. When our neighbors are happy, we are all HAPPY and I feel safe staying here because they will protect us. Ernest is building his family a home with the money that I am paying him. One block of concrete costs $1. Every time I pay him he buys another block for $1. So far he has built one room with 400 blocks. A few more rooms and he will have a HOME! He does all the work himself. He does not smoke and he does not drink. ALL his money goes to feeding his wife and son, Ellie. Also, his son Ellie, is old enough to go to school but has no sponsor. It costs $850 for a child to go to school. This is for tuition, uniforms, morning snack & lunch, bus ride. They get alot for the money. It would be very easy for him to just jump on the bus with the Karim Children as he is our neighbor. So, as you can see, every dollar MATTERS. Not everyone can give BIG but everyone can give small with a BIG Heart! So, how many blocks of concrete for a $1 can you buy today so Ernest and his family can have a home??? And who doesn't want to help a little boy get an Education? If you are interested in helping, PLEASE, email me, message me, or post on my wall under this blog post. Every donation of $25 or more will receive a tax receipt if you wish . Just go to bridgesofhope.ca ; go to Donations and in your comment box PLEASE put Tanzania/Karim Project. Remember every $1 matters here, so again I ask "HOW MANY BLOCKS CAN YOU BUY TODAY" to help a family have a home?? :)
